Initiated by the Audi family, the recent rehabilitation of the soap factory into a thematic soap museum unveiled an unexpected architectural wealth. The historical analysis of the structure confirmed that the oldest part of the factory dates back to the 17th century.
The thematic museum purports to relate the history of soap in the area stretching from Aleppo to Nablus, and to show the various stages of its manufacturing and the diversity of its shapes and properties. Visitors can discover the saponification vats and the cutting and drying techniques of handicraft soap, explore the hamman rituals, admire the collection of objects found inside the building structure and learn about its evolution. At the end of the visit, they can find a choice of contemporary items related to the bath at the museum’s gift shop “Hammam”, and enjoy a break in the coffee shop.
The viewpoint of the exhibit is to highlight the architectural elements and declinations resulting from the latest excavations and to use a contemporary vocabulary in all the new additions that are necessary to the visit of the museum.
